FORMER MAYOR AND SUPERVISOR PASSES AWAY.
Fred Christian Newkirk passed away Wednesday, June 7 as the result of a paralytic stroke with which he was visited ten days before. He had been in ill health for several months but had been down town the day he suffered the stroke.
He was a farmer for many years and after retiring and coming into Williamsburg he was elected mayor of the town in 1926. He took office in April of that year.
At the conclusion of his 2 year term he was reelected in 1928 and before this term was out he resigned and went back to one of his farms. Later he returned to Williamsburg.
He served as county supervisor for a three year term through the years of 1931 to 1933 inclusive. In 1937 he ran again for the same office and was elected for another 3 years.
He was born in Iowa township September 18, 1869 the son of John and Caroline Miller Newkirk. He received his schooling in St. John's Lutheran parochial school at Homestead. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran church at Homestead.
He married Emma Elizabeth Cotant of Marengo August 9, 1892. To this union two sons were born who survive their father and their mother. They are Walter and Alfred of Williamsburg.
The wife of his first marriage died May 11, 1936. On the 29th of August 1938 he married Olga Swanson at Davenport, Iowa. His wife Olga survives him. There were no children by his second marriage. Besides his two sons by his first wife he is survived by five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He leaves the following brothers; Edward, Ernest and David, all of Williamsburg.
The funeral was held in St. Paul's Lutheran church Saturday, June 10 at 2 p. m. The Rev. Enno Schuelke officiated. Miss Luella Heitshusen was the soloist. Interment was in Immanuel Lutheran cemetery in York. Pallbearers were M. F. Sauter, Gearge Schindler, Roy Engelbert, George Stake, Ross Strike and John E. Donohoe.
