John F. Newkirk, Died--- At his home in Iowa township Saturday, April 7, 1900, John Newkirk, aged 55 years, 3months and 2 days.
Deceased was born in Franklin county, Indiana, Jan. 5, 1845, and came to Iowa in 1868. By his industry and economy he had accumulated a competence; and no man was more respected for his honesty and integrity than John F. Newkirk. No good cause ever appealed to him in vain. He was fair and just in his dealings with his fellowmen, and as a neighbor his many acts of kindness will be gratefully remembered by their recipients.
Politically he was a strong and uncompromising democrat, but he could concede honesty in those who differed from him on political questions.
Mr. Newkirk was taken sick last June, an attack of rheumatism having afflicted him. For five months he was constantly on a sick bed, and death came as a welcome release from bodily suffering. The immediate cause of death was cirrhosis of the liver, and the best medical attention failed to ward off the dread destroyer.
He leaves a wife, three daughters, eight sons and ten grandchildren to mourn the loss of a kind and indulgent relative.
The funeral occurred Monday, conducted at the German Lutheran St. John's church, by the pastor, Rev. C. W. Baumhoefner. There were 30 teams in the funeral cortege, which testifies to the great esteem in which deceased was held. Interment was had in the cemetery near the church.
The DEMOCRAT in union with many friends of the family tenders sympathy.
