ERNEST NEWKIRK DIED SUNDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS.
Ernest G. Newkirk, 79, died Sunday evening, July 24, at his home after suffering a stroke. He had been in failing health for the past seven years and was bedfast the past five weeks.
He was born Dec. 24, 1875, in Iowa township. He was a son of John and Caroline Mueller Newkirk. Mr. Newkirk received his education at St. John's Parochial school.
Feb. 9, 1889, he married Anna Schwarting at Immanuel Lutheran church, York township.
Services were held Wednesday, July 27, at St. Paul's Lutheran church with the Rev. Otto Beer of Homestead officiating. Music was by St. Paul's men's quartet, composed of George Petershagen, Oscar Glandorf, Merlin Von Ahsen, and Albert Mews, Jr.
Pallbearers were: William Newkirk, Elmer Webert, Walter Newkirk, Vernon Newkirk, Vernon Schwarting, and Otto Iburg. Burial was in Immanuel's cemetery. McSwiggin & Uhlmann Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
He is survived by his wife; two children, Friemond Newkirk of Williamsburg and Mrs Earl Kuch of Van Horne; one brother, Edward Newkirk of Williamsburg; six grandchildren, Bernice Newkirk, Donald Kuch, Leland Kuch, Nadine Kuch, Ruth Ann James, and Donald Kuch, in the armed forces overseas. One son preceded him in death.
