The death of Mrs. Emma Dora Orthmann occurred last Saturday at the home of her son Ganus, with whom she has been living for some time. Death came after a long illness during which at no time was there much if any hope of final recovery. Mrs. Orthmann was 69 years of age and in her passing, the ranks of the O'Brien county pioneers were reduced by one more.

She was born in Germany in 1846 She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in that country when a young woman. At the age of 19 she came to this country and 34 years of her life have been spent in O'Brien county.

She was married at Davenport to H. F. Orthmann in 1860 and they came to O'Brien county in 1882. Mr. Orthmann went to Colorado some years ago for his health but for several months past nothing has been heard from him and no trace of his whereabouts could be discoved. To this union there were born nine children, of which eight lived to grow up and all of which were present at the funeral.

Services were held on Monday afternoon at the home south of town and at the church. Burial was in Prairie View cemetery.

Thus is closed another life which had woven into it much that helped to build the early history of this community on a firm foundation. She lived a worthy life and her memory will be revered among those who knew her.

The following are the children: Ganus and Wm., of Paullina; Henry, of Sutherland; Edward of Sioux City, Cerbena Hinkey, [sic Zerbena] of Hartley; Adella Schierholz, of Paullina; Handgen Claussen, [sic Clausen] of Melvin: Matilda Schultz, of Granville. There as also a sister, Mrs. Flora Schiltz, of Willow Springs, Mo., and 16 grandchildren.
