Wilhelmina Emma Steindel was born in Burg bei Magdeburg, Saxon-Anhalt and in the same city married her first husband Johan Wilhelm MATERN. They came to America in 1886 on the "Eider" with four children, settled in Scranton and added six more children in the next five years, including a set of twin boys. Wilhelm died in 1895 (around that time, many in the MATERN family were anglicizing their surname to MARTIN, hence the inscription on Emma's marker) and in 1900 she married Philip Saar. Sadly, she died just about a month later, and was buried in her new husband's plot at Pittston Avenue Cemetery.
