Nellie was the daughter of Anson C Damon and Tadeezbaa', Hashtl´ishnii (Mud) Navajo clan.

During her childhood Nellie attended Fort Defiance and Haskell Indian schools. But, this was a time of intermittent schools, medical services, and other services. According to the censuses she could read and write and was described after her marriage as a homemaker.

It is not known why Nellie was living in the home of Herman and Jennie Fryling of Michigan. [1900 Navajo Indian Reservation, Arizona Territory Census]

It is not known why Nellie and her brothers were living with Hasten Stso [Stes Haston] [Stro Hasten] age 62 born in Arizona. Brothers listed were: Willie, George and James.
[1910 Navajo Indian Reservation, Apache, Arizona Census]

(1900 and 1910 Censuses have not been found for her parents.)

In Oct 1916 Nellie married "Bilagáana" Alexander Black who had come to Fort Defiance in 1895 as a Presbyterian missionary. In 1917, with a $500 loan from Alexander’s Kentucky cousins and probably additional money from Nellie’s family livestock wealth, they started the Bonito Trading Store on the south side of Fort Defiance. The store carried few accounts, instead trading merchandise (from Gallup wholesalers) directly for weaving, wool, livestock, hides, bone, hooves, pinon nuts.

Issue:

1) Alexander Chandler Black (1917 Fort Defiance, Apache, Arizona - 1918 Fort Defiance, Apache, Arizona)

2) Ruth Helen Black (1918 Fort Defiance, Apache, Arizona - 21 Jun 1995 Albuquerque, Bernalillo, New Mexico). Her FAG is # 18845756. Ruth married Marvin LeRoy Seal (1915 - 1992) FAG # 60344398.

3) Anna Angell Black (b. 1921 New Mexico). She married 1) Ralph Baird and 2) Paul C. Sowers [FAG # 19693266].
