Sister Darlene Schwarte, CHM, 78, died March 17, 2016 at Bishop Drumm Retirement Center, Johnston. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Bishop Drumm, Our Lady of Peace Chapel. Visitation at the Chapel begins 3 p.m. Monday, March 21 concluding with a 4 p.m. Vigil Service. It continues from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the Mass. Interment is 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Ottumwa.

Darlene Lavinia Schwarte was born September 15, 1937 in Earling, IA to Joseph and Helen Ratigan Schwarte. She entered the Congregation of the Humility of Mary in 1956 and professed vows in 1959. Sister received her AA from Ottumwa Heights College, Ottumwa, IA and a teaching certificate from Marycrest College, Davenport, IA.

She taught elementary school in St. Pius X, Des Moines, IA; Sacred Heart, West Des Moines, IA; St. Mary, Oskaloosa, IA; was a teacher aide in St. Pius X, Rock Island, IL; St. Pius X, Des Moines, IA; and a para-professional at St. Patrick, Missouri Valley, IA and St. Edward, Houston, TX.

From 1983 until her retirement in 2010, she was engaged in food service at Humility of Mary Center, Davenport; she had previously assisted with food service at Ottumwa Heights College and Motherhouse, Ottumwa, IA.

She is survived by 3 brothers; 3 sisters; 2 sisters-in-law. Other survivors are the Sisters and Associates of her religious community.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Eugene, Dwayne, Harold and Michael and her sister, Sister Madonna Schwarte, ND.

Memorials may be made to the Congregation of the Humility of Mary.
