Michael Robert Schwarte was born on August 30, 1940, to Joseph and Helen (Ratigan) Schwarte in Earling, Iowa.

He attended grade school in Defiance, Iowa. He lived at home with his parents until 1972 when he went to live at Handicap Village in Clear Lake, Iowa. He moved to New Hope Village in Carroll, Iowa, when that facility opened.

Michael was artistic and thoroughly enjoyed painting and doing woodworking. He liked to put puzzles together and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, watching games on t.v. whenever he could. He also spent a lot of time watching western movies and listening to country music.

Michael had lived at New Hope Village since their opening in 1977.

He died at St. Anthony's Hospital in Carroll on Monday, March 31, 2008, having attained the age of sixty-seven years, seven months, and one day.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Eugene and Dwayne.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Irene and her husband Edwin Reischl of Manning, Iowa, Albert Schwarte and his wife Gay of Defiance, Iowa; Harold Schwarte of Carroll, Iowa, Sister Madonna Schwarte of Omaha, Nebraska, Sister Darlene Schwarte of Davenport, Iowa, Thelma and her husband Gordon Nelson of Harlan, Iowa, Karen and her husband Clarence Brinker of Westphalia, Iowa, Richard Schwarte and his wife Myrna of Irwin, Iowa, and Joseph Schwarte and his wife Vernita of Defiance, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Marilyn Schwarte of Manilla and Glenda and husband Lew Hall of Defiance; nieces and nephews, other family members, and his many friends at New Hope Village, his home for thirty-one years.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 with Rev. Michael Berner celebrating the 10:30 AM service at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Harlan, Iowa.

Honorary casket bearers were Lew Hall, Edwin Rieschl, Harold Schwarte, and Terry Schwarte. Serving as casket bearers were Gordon Nelson, Richard Schwarte, Albert Schwarte, Joseph Schwarte, Clarence Brinker, and Dameian Schwarte.

Interment was held at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Defiance, Iowa.
