The following was written by nephew, Greg Kahler.
Richie was born in Denver, the last of 12 children to Henry and Mollie Kahler. Born to a large German family living in the Globeville area of Denver. Baptized and confirmed at the First Congregational Church in Globeville.
Being the last born to a large family, he was spoiled by many older sisters and brothers. Richie lived at home most of his lifetime due to his learning disabilities. His mother spent her whole life making sure he was taken care of properly at home. After his mother's passing, his sister Shirley gladly stepped up and continued his care at home, with the extra love needed.
After Shirley's passing, Walter made sure Richie's needs were taken care of and that he had safe places to live. Richie lived in various group homes until the last 8 years, when he was privileged to be placed in the Westminster home of Darrell and Lynn Canham. The Kahler family is so very fortunate that Richie was able to spend his last years with such a loving family.
Richie was made one of their own family members They cared for him, got him ready everyday for work at Laradon Hall, and took him to numerous appointments. Darrell mentioned that Richie loved the outings that Laradon Hall provided. One of Richie's favorite outings was when he helped with the Meals on Wheels program through Laradon Hall. He loved getting out and meeting people. Darrell's dogs even adopted Richie waiting every day for him to get off the bus and give them their snack. The dogs enjoyed going into Richie's room and watching TV with him.
The family wants to thank Harmony Homes, Darrell and Lynn from the bottom of their hearts, for all they did for Richie during these last 8 years. They also appreciate Laradon Hall for the many years of providing Richie with a place to work, train, and participate in all those outings he loved so much. Thank You!
Richie was a unique loving person who loved to laugh and loved to dance. Boy did he love to dance. At the many family weddings, he would dance with everyone he could, until the last song was played. He is now dancing in heaven with his mother and sisters.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Henry and Mollie Kahler; sisters, Mildred Bush, Helen Dick, Ilene Steinke, Shirley Kahler and brothers, Harold, Earl and Leroy Kahler. He is survived by 1 sister, 3 brothers, 23 nieces and nephews.
