Anna Sirk was born in Radkersburg, Austria on July 20, 1862, the eldest of five daughters of Joseph [Sirk] and Franziska (Frances) Sirk. Franziska died at the age of 42 on 3/21/1878 when Anna was just 15. Anna worked as a domestic in Halbenrain at the farm of Peter Wallner and Julia Lamprecht Wallner, parents of Anton Wallner (173190113). Anton went to America in 1882 to start a bakery in New Bedford, MA. In 1888 Anton sent a letter home to his parents in Austria asking “Is Anna still with you? If so I’d like to marry her.” Anton included money to pay for Anna's passage to America if she would marry him. Anna sailed to America, arriving 2/22/1888, carrying enough money tucked in her bosom for a return voyage if things did not work out. Eleven days later she and Anton were married on 3/1/1888, and she got to spend the money in America on other things. Together they raised a family in New Bedford of 5 girls and 4 boys. She was deeply loved by all her children and grandchildren.

Three of Anna's sisters (Marie, Mathilda and Fannie) also came to live in New Bedford. Her fourth sister, Hedwig, stayed in Austria where she married Josef Maier. Sister Mathilda Sirk (111126340) married Anton Losert (44615558).
