Richard J. Wirtz, 86, Marshfield, died on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at House of the Dove, Marshfield.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 30, 2017 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Rev. Savarimuthu Selvalaj and Deacon Ray Draeger officiating. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Marshfield, at a later date and serving as pallbearers will be grandsons, Richard Wirtz III, David Wirtz, Joseph Hastreiter, Thomas Hastreiter, Adam Wirtz, Benjamin Wirtz, Luke Wirtz, Chase Wirtz and Grant Wirtz. The visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Friday at Rembs Funeral Home and from 10:00 am until service time on Saturday at Sacred Heart Church.

Richard was born on July 16, 1931 in the Town of Cranmoor, Wood County, to Nicholas and Rose Mary (Kundert) Wirtz and was a 1950 graduate of Maryheart High School in Pittsville. He married Barbara E. Grosklaus on June 12, 1954 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Wisconsin Rapids.

Richard had been employed as a sheet metal journeyman until his retirement. He had been involved in Big Brother’s, Sacred Heart Athletic Association of which he had served as president and he volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul in Marshfield. He was affectionately known as Mr. Fix-it and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time at the lake and the cottage and was a Packer fan. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a devout Catholic and longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara and their children, Richard J. Wirtz II of Green Bay, Douglas (Joyanne) Wirtz of Marshfield, Pamela (Louis) Hastreiter of Sun Prairie, Mark (Thomas Rodehau) Wirtz of Falls Church, Virginia, Patricia Wirtz of Marshfield and Matthew (Amy) Wirtz of Spencer. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He is further survived by 2 brothers, Clarence Wirtz and Jerome (Sue) Wirtz, all of Wisconsin Rapids, and a sister, JoAnne (Jack) Hackman of Marshfield.

He was predeceased by his parents, a grandson, Daniel Wirtz, sisters, Ann Deflipps, Genevieve Wentzel, Marie Graveen, Isabel Acott, Frances Albrecht and Theresa Arnold, and brothers, Bernard and George Wirtz.

Memorials may be designated in his name to House of the Dove, Marshfield.
