Verena Mary Leukam was born June 18, 1926 in Grove Township, Stearns County, to Joseph and Elizabeth (Berling) Leukam and grew up on her parents’ farm east of Meire Grove. She attended school in Meire Grove.
Verena was united in marriage to Edward Uphus on Sept. 9, 1947 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Meire Grove. Verena and Ed lived in Greenwald and Lake Henry, then moved to Minneapolis in 1962. In 1974, they began farming east of Belgrade, and in 1991, retired and moved into town. In addition to being a housewife and working on the farm, Verena babysat and did house cleaning while living in Minneapolis and did bookkeeping for Ed’s McNess business.
Verena and Ed loved to travel and took many trips together. Verena was a member of St. Francis deSales Church in Belgrade, Christian Mothers, the Catholic Aid Association and Belgrade Senior Citizens. She enjoyed coffee and playing cards with her friends, visits from family and friends, watching television and spending time with her cat, Mittens.
Verena is survived by Fritz and Marilyn Uphus; sisters-in-law, Viola Leukam and Irene Leukam; many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Edward, on Feb. 13, 2006; parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Leukam; infant daughter; brothers, Leo, Albert, Dillo and Aloys Leukam; sister, Cecelia Rieland; brother-in-law, Norbert Rieland; sisters-in-law, Evelyn, Leora and Monica Leukam.
