Charles L. “Charlie” Craven, age 77, of Homer, passed away at his home with his family by his side on Sunday June 2, 2019.

Charlie was born on October 26, 1941 in Lincoln Park to Claude Robert and Sophie (Kovacs) Craven. The family moved to Homer Township to what became the family farm at the corner of R. Drive South and 30 Mile Road. Charlie grew up going to country school at Agnew School, and attended Homer High School from where he graduated in 1960.

Charlie was a longtime member of the Homer Fire Department where he served as Assistant Chief and enjoyed working the fire crew at MIS for the Indy and Nascar races for many years. He was an avid fisherman, spending many summers with his beloved wife Annie camping and fishing in Canada.

That year he went to work at Simpson Industries in Litchfield. Over his career there he did many jobs and attended many trade schools to further his knowledge of his trade.

The last 10 years he was an Industrial Engineer for Simpson and did troubleshooting at all their plants, as well as on the new designs they came out with. He retired in 1998 but was called back as a consultant by Simpson after that.

Charlie married the love of his life, Andrea “Annie” Rising on December 11, 1960 in Homer. They enjoyed a long marriage that included trips to Alaska and around the country to wherever they could take their fifth wheel camper. They did everything together! Annie preceded him in death on March 4, 2006.

A favorite story Charlie enjoyed relating was when the Simpson plant in Mexico City had a production issue that nobody could solve. Charlie negotiated a trip that included his wife. He arrived at the plant and five minutes later the problem was solved! Charlie and Annie enjoyed a tour of that region in Mexico with the rest of the time!

Until his final illness he was a member of the Albion Moose Lodge, Albion Eagles Lodge, and the Albion Leisure Hour Club.
Surviving are his daughter; Jennifer Kuhn of Delaware; sons, John Craven of Homer and Brian Craven of Delaware; his beloved caregiver Amanda Dilsaver of Homer; brother Robert Craven of Homer; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 sisters Shirley Mees and Joyce Cooper.

Friends may call at the Homer Chapel of Kempf Family Funeral and Cremation Services, 303 S. Hillsdale Street on Thursday June 6, 2019 from 4:00-7:00 PM.
