Robert L. Rhoda, Sr., age 90, of Valparaiso, passed away on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at home. Bob was born January 16, 1921 in Valparaiso to Edna Lane Rhoda and Hans Carl Rhoda.
He graduated from Valparaiso High School in 1939, attended Indiana University, and completed BS and MA degrees at Ball State University. Bob served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army and received a Bronze Star for meritorious service. He was a teacher and coach in Valparaiso Community Schools for 34 years retiring in 1981. Bob was inducted into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Valparaiso High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989 due to his many athletic accomplishments.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Kenneth (Dan) Rhoda; and son, Robert L. Rhoda, Jr. Bob is survived by M. Joyce, his loving wife of 68 years; daughter, Lynne (Doyne) Swinford of Indianapolis; son Kevin (Mona) of Omaha, son, Brian (Gaylene) of Valparaiso; five grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Geraldine Rhoda of Valparaiso; and two nephews. The family is especially thankful for the support and love of Davaajv (David) Ulziibayar, Bob's caregiver for three and one-half years.
Bob was a member of First United Methodist Church where calling will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011 from 2:00-5:00 p.m. with funeral service following at 5:00 p.m. Moellerfuneralhome.com
