Ernest was the son of Christian Carl Obenland and his wife, Marie Magdalena Kreher. He was born on October 16, 1884, after his parents immigrated to the United States from Wurttemburg, Germany. In fact, his mother was pregnant with Ernest during the trip to the U.S.

Ernest's father was a carpenter, while his mother took care of the home and family. Ernest spent his childhood in Clay Center, Clay County, Kansas.

Sometime in 1908, Ernest married Carroll Prior. In the 1910 Census, the couple lived at 221 E. 8th St., in Concordia, Cloud County, Kansas. Ernest was a plumber.

On September 12, 1918, Ernest registered for the draft for WWI. He and Carroll were living at 921 Pierre St., in Manhattan, Riley County, Kansas. The description of him on the back of his registration says Ernest was tall and slender. He had brown eyes and black hair.

Ernest and Carroll had one child, a daughter named Ruth Carroll. She was born on October 20, 1912.

Throughtout his adult life, Ernest made his living as a plumber. In the 1920 Census, he owned his own business in Manhattan, Kansas. The business must have done well, because he and Carroll owned their home free from any mortgages.

Ernest was a member of the Independent Order of the Odd Fellows, Lodge #17 in Manhattan, Kansas.

Ernest died on October 1, 1947 in Manhattan, Kansas.
