Gustav John was the son of German immigrants Christian Carl Obenland and his wife, Maria Magdalena Kreher. Gustav was born on January 6, 1887 in Clay Center, Kansas.

Gustav married Mabel Hawley in about 1910. They adopted two sons, Clayton and Wendell. Clayton was born in 1912. His last name at birth is unknown at this time. Wendell is listed in the 1930 Census as Wendell Wolfe, a ward of Gustav and Mabel. Wendell was born in 1924. The couple also adopted a daughter, Margaret Orene, born in 1919.

Gustav was a plumber, working with his brothers in their own company, "Obenland Brothers Plumbing and Heating" in Manhattan, Kansas.

On June 5, 1917, Gustav registered for the draft for WWI. He and his family were living at 718 Osage, in Manhattan, Kansas. The draft described Gustav as tall and slender, with gray eyes and black hair.

During the 1930 Census, the family was living at 1126 Houston St. in Manhattan, Kansas. They owned the house, which had a value of $7,000.

Sometime after Mabel died in 1938, Gustav married Jennie McDowell. The exact date of the wedding is unknown at this time.

Gustav died on Christmas day, 1942 in Manhattan, Kansas. He was buried in Sunset Cemetery on December 29, 1942.
