Paul E. Bielert, 81, of Champaign died at Provena Covenant Medical Center in Urbana on Oct. 18, 2009, at 3:15 a.m.
Paul was born on May 4, 1928, in Denmark, Mich., a son of Henry and Helda (Zutz) Bielert. He married Marietta G. Carl on Nov. 19, 1949, in Rantoul. She passed away on Jan. 30, 1994.
Survivors include a son, Kevin (Joyce) Bielert of Philo; one grandson, Dustin Bielert of Philo; three sisters, Amanda Kabat, Hildegard Adolph and Margaret Williamson, all of Saginaw, Mich.; three brothers, Roland Bielert of Vassar, Mich., Emanuel Bielert of Clio, Mich., and Raymond Bielert of Champaign.
He was preceded in death by one son, Terry, who died at birth, three sisters and three brothers.
Paul served proudly in the Air Force from 1947 to 1950, where he was an airplane engine mechanic and attained the rank of sergeant. Paul was a life member of American Legion Post 24, where was a frequent cook and volunteer.
He was an avid golfer, was on the American Legion Golf Committee and was instrumental in the Legion charity golf events.
He was also a friend of VFW 5520 and was a card-carrying member of American Legion Post 24 Auxiliary under the name "Paulette."
Paul was a fan of both the Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also enjoyed growing vegetables in his garden, but roses were his specialty.
