Bruning Banner dated 7-13-1939:
G. W. Philippi, pioneer Bruning resident, passed away at his home here July 4th, at the age of 82 years, 6 months and 18 days.
Mr. Philippi was a true pioneer, coming to this vicinity before Bruning was a town. At the age of nine years he came from Germany with his parents and settled at El Paso, Ill. In January, 1885, he with his wife came to Nebraska and located on a farm northwest of Belvidere. In the fall of 1890, they moved to the "home" place where the youngest son, Theodore Philippi, now resides. The deceased retired from the farm in 1919 and lived in Bruning until his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Philippi observed their 50th wedding anniversary nine years ago when on February 18, 1930, their children planned a delightful celebration for their parents on that occasion at the home of the eldest son, William.
Surviving are his widow, three sons and two daughters. One daughter, Mrs. Aug. E. Dagefoerde, preceded him in death in 1924.
Funeral services are being held today (Thursday) at the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Interment will be in the church cemetery in the lot Mr. Philippi purchased over 50 years ago and in which he will be the first to be buried.

Obituary:
Gerd Wilhelm Philippi, son of Martin Wm. Philippi and his wife, Dorothea, nee Orth, was born December 16, 1856, at Apen, Oldenburg, Germany, and was one of God's people by infant Baptism. At the age of nine years he and his parents came to America and took up residence at El Paso, Woodford county, Illinois, later moving on a farm near El Paso. Here the deceased received instructions in the teachings of the Bible and, upon confession of Faith, was received into Holy Communion with the Evangelical Lutheran church of El Paso, Ill.,
After the death of his parents, he entered into holy wedlock with Miss Sophie Middendorf. The marriage was solemnized on February 18, 1880, at Bloomington, Ill. The union was blessed with six children, all of them now living but one.
The family came to Nebraska in 1885, and until 1890 lived on a farm northwest of Belvidere. Then they moved on the farm one and one-half miles southwest of Bruning. In 1919, Mr. Philippi retired from active farming and he and his wife took up residence in the town of Bruning.
Up to less than two weeks ago the deceased was blessed with fairly good health. Then he was taken sick suddenly and died peacefully and in the faith July 4, 1939, at the goodly age of 82 years, 6 months and 18 days.
The immediate mourners are his wife, his faithful companion of 59 years; his daughters, Mrs. H. W. Bruning and Mrs. Herman Springer of Bruning; his sons, William A. of Ohiowa and Fred M. and Theodore H. of Bruning; 23 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
