Sr. Angela Merici was born Maria Winkelmann in Westphalia, Missouri to Stephan Heinrich Winkelmann and Anna Angela Heckemeyer. She was baptized on Oct. 17, 1878, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia, with Louisa Fechtel as sponsor.
Maria took her vows as a nun of the Order of School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was named for St. Angela Merici (1474-1540), the foundress of the Ursuline Sisters.
Her younger sister Margaretha also became a Notre Dame nun, taking the name St. Mary Bona. She is also buried in Resurrection Cemetery, as well as their brother, William.
