Funeral Services for Marie Johanna Schmidt, 93, of Wheaton, Minnesota will be held Monday, January 19, 2009 at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton, Minnesota with Rev. Charles Horkey officiating. Pallbearers will be Keith Sorensen, Ron Carlson, Daniel Wennerberg, Jeramy Tweten, Ryan Christianson, Daniel Gatzke, Chad Warner and Orvis Anhorn. Organist will be Sara Rinke. Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. at the Ranney Funeral Home in Wheaton, and one hour prior to services on Monday at the church. Interment will be in the spring at St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

Marie was born on March 26, 1915 on a farm near Le Mars, Iowa, the oldest child born to Gerd and Sophie (Weber) Lubben. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. When Marie was 18 years old, the family moved to a farm in Parnell Township in Traverse County, Minnesota and started farming there. They eventually moved to a farm near Norcross, Minnesota.

In 1947, she married Gilbert Schmidt. They resided on a farm near Wheaton where they farmed and raised their family. Marie worked for a number of years at the Wheaton Community Hospital. She volunteered at the Senior Center in Wheaton for many years and was also an active member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Wheaton. After the death of her husband in 1978 she eventually moved into town. She always enjoyed her family, playing cards and traveling. The last four years she was a resident of the Traverse Care Center and always enjoyed activities like bingo and card playing, but most of all looked forward to visits from family and friends.

Marie passed away on January 14, 2009 at Meritcare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota.

Marie is survived by four daughters and their husbands: Esther (Harvey) Sorensen of Wheaton, Minnesota, Darlene (Douglas) Christianson of Kindred, North Dakota, Katherine (Ross) Warner of Mapleton, North Dakota and Phyllis (Roy) Murray of Moorhead, Minnesota, eleven grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, one sister: Clara Osterman of Alexandria, Minnesota, four brothers: Walter (Leone) Lubben of Wheaton, Minnesota, Wallace (Margaret) Lubben of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Pete (Arlene) Lubben of Roseville, Minnesota and Lowell (Dorothy) Lubben of Eagan, Minnesota.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister: Loretta Lubben, four brothers: Harm, Albert, Victor and Darrell Lubben, and one great-granddaughter.

Ranney Funeral Home in Wheaton, MN was in charge of arrangements.
