ELMER F. OSTERBUHR, 98, of Hawarden, died peacefully at Sanford Vermillion Hospital on Thursday, February 26, 2009 after a brief illness.

Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Memorials may be directed to the Memorial Fund at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Elmer was born May 30, 1910 in Plymouth County, near LeMars, Iowa. He attended country school until about age 16, when he dropped out to pursue a career in farming with his brothers. Besides farming, Elmer became a skilled carpenter. He married Martha M. Robinson on November 18, 1953, in his sister Anne's home. They enjoyed 33 years of loving matrimony until Martha's death in 1986.

Elmer retired from farming at age 65 and settled into a quiet retirement of gardening, carpentry and enjoying his grandchildren. He used his carpentry skills to help build Calliope Village in Hawarden. Some of the happiest times of Elmer's life were spent with his grandkids. They loved exploring the farm and he took great delight in showing it to them. They loved Grandpa's annual Easter egg hunts. They could hardly wait for him to change out of his church clothes so they could start the hunt. Mom and Dad would hide the eggs and the kids would stay in the house with Grandpa, so he could make sure they would not peak. Grandpa would laugh as they scrambled for eggs. Grandpa would give aid to the youngest and occasionally drop an egg out of his overall pockets when the older child or children weren't looking.

The family Halloween tradition was to go to Grandpa's pumpkin patch so they could each pick out their favorite. One year, the pumpkins topped 110 pounds! The grandkids were overjoyed, and the jack-o-lanterns were the best ever.

Cherishing his memory are his daughter, Robin and husband Kim Callahan of Vermillion, South Dakota; his three beloved grandchildren, Hilary, Kevin, and Sean; and many nephews and nieces.

Elmer was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; brother, Otto and his wife Irene; and two sisters, Anne Pefferman and her husband Hilbert, and Martha Popken and her husband Elmer.

Elmer's casket bearers will be Kevin Callahan, David Huebner, Lynn Thorpe, Marlin Osterbuhr, Jeff Eilts, and Mark Opdahl.
