Donald DeWayne Cerny, 88, of Iowa City, formerly of Lone Tree, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at his residence in Iowa City following an extended illness. Funeral services for Donald will be held 10:30 A.M. on Wednesday, October 3, 2007 at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Loren Yoder will officiate the services. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457. Visitation for Donald will be held on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Donald. Sympathy notes may be left for the Cerny family at www.lewisfuneralhomes.com.

Donald Cerny was born on July 14, 1919, in Lone Tree, the son of Charles and Tillie (Knotek) Cerny. On September 4, 1947 he was united in marriage to Ruby Prymek in Iowa City. Don was a World War II veteran and served overseas in Italy, and the European, African, and Middle Eastern Theatre. Don farmed all his life around Lone Tree moving to Iowa City in 1988. He enjoyed his time spent at his cabin on the Highway 22, fishing, hunting, and spending time with friends and family.

Donald will be deeply missed by his wife, Ruby of Iowa City; his son, Steve and his wife Dee of Riverside; his daughter, Shirley Cerny Wood of Tupelo, Mississippi; four grandchildren, Andy Cerny and his wife Rachel of Riverside, Angela Hazelett and her husband Joel of Ainsworth, Jake Wood and Kelly Wood, both of Tupelo, Mississippi; three great granddaughters, Kayla Cerny, Kelsi Cerny, and Halle Hazelett.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Maynard, Robert, and Edwin "Hank" Cerny, and Edwin's twin sister in infancy.
