Maynard "Abe" Cerny, 87, Lone Tree, died Wednesday, February 26, 2002, at Iowa Veterans Home, Marshalltown.

Services are 10 a.m. Saturday at Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree. The Rev. Ann Rouse will officiate. Burial will be at Lone Tree Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the Lone Tree American Legion.

Visitation is 4-6 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established.

Mr. Cerny was born on February 19, 1914, the son of Charles and Tilly (Knotek) Cerny. He married Irene Ginn on September 29, 1946, in Muscatine. She preceded him in death in 1990.

He and his wife worked together in home construction, building eight homes.
Maynard was a life-long Lone Tree resident, except for the last two years in Marshalltown.

He served in the U.S. Army from July 23, 1942 to Jan. 18, 1946. Maynard was a master mechanic with the 12th Armored Tank Division.

Survivors include a brother, Donald Cerny of Iowa City, and special friend, Joe Geiger of Lone Tree.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two brothers, Robert and Edwin; and a sister, Evelyn in infancy.
