John H. Harpenau, 78, of Le Mars, died Tuesday (April 3, 1979) in a Sioux City hospital after one month of illness. He died one day after his 78th birthday.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in St. Joseph Catholic church at Le Mars. Rev. Leo Harpenau, a brother, will assist the pastor, the Rev. Francis Staber. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

The rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. Thursday in the Luedtke funeral home, by the parish at 8 p.m., and by the Catholic Order of Foresters at 8:30 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will attend funeral services in a body.

Mr. Harpenau was born April 2,1901, in Le Mars to Frank and Bernadine Deters Harpenau.

He married Philomena Langel April 17, 1929, in Le Mars. They farmed in Fredonia township In Plymouth county until October of 1965 when they retired and moved to Le Mars. She died in 1975.

Survivors are four daughters, Mrs., Chester (Doris) Bergner of Lancaster, Calif., Mrs. Gerald (Vernell) Chapman of Le Mars and Mrs. Richard (Marjorie) Frericks and Mrs. Paul (Helen) Galles, both of Remsen; six sons, Le Roy of Le Mars; Robert and Bill, both of Remsen, Donald of Diamond Bar, Calif., Ray of Oyens and Thomas of Alton; four brothers, Tony, Al and Isadore, all of Remsen and the Rev. Leo of Holsteln; three sisters, Mrs. Anton Kolbeck of Humboldt, S,D., and Mrs. Marvin Kolbeck and Mrs. Phil Schwarz, both of Le Mars; 44 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary, two brothers, Joseph and Henry, and a sister, Mrs. Evelyn Miller.
