Marriage and Family
Catherine Nathe married John J. Primus on February 25, 1851 near Helden, Germany.

In 1855, John J. & Catherine (Nathe) Primus and their two young daughters; Elizabeth - 2 1/2 and Anna - under 1 year; immigrated to America. The other members of the Primus family that joined them on the nine week trans-oceanic journey were John's parents - John W Primus Sr & Elizabeth (Giese) Primus, and their three other sons - Casper Primus, Joseph Primus and Anton Primus.

In 1857, Casper, age 18 and older brother Joseph, age 21, immigrataed to America. The two brothers worked and saved money to be able to pay for the trip to America for their oldest brother, Anton Nathe, and their mother, Anna Margaretha Nathe. In 1858, the two sisters, Elizabeth and Anna Maria, their husbands and children would also accompany their mother on the trip.

The Primus family first settled near Milwaukee, Wisc. - a popular place many Germans called home. While living in Wisconsin, John J & Catherine Primus had 3 more children: Joseph (1857), Mary Anna (1860) and John Primus Jr. (1862).

The Move to Minnesota
In 1862 the Primus family moved to a 160 acre farm 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile east of Meire Grove, Minnesota - specifically Sections 16 & 17 of Grove Township in Stearns County, Minn. An additional 80 acres was due north of the homestead, in Section 8 of Grove Township.

A log cabin was erected to house the family. The cabin was a primitive affair with dirt floors and no windows and only the kitchen stove for light and heat. They had an ox team for farming, but they had no suitable winter shelter for them. Often on winter nights, the oxen and the members of the family slept in a row on the hard floor, with nothing in the way of a bed but some coarse grass cut from the river bottom.

During the first winter (1856-57), the family had absolutely nothing in the way of purchased provisions except 100 pounds of flour. Their principal fare was deer and rabbit meet cooked in various fashions. There were no vegetables and even potatos being unknown during the whole winter.

Primus Family
The last three children of Catherine and John J Primus were born on their farm in Grove Township, Stearns County, Minn. The family was complete with eight children.

- Elizabeth Primus Welle
- Anna Primus Imdieke
- Joseph J. Primus
- Mary Primus Leukam
- John Primus Jr.
- Catherine Primus Marthaler
- Anton J Primus
- Pauline Primus Schneider

Ancestorial Family Farms
In 1890, nearly 30 years after arriving in Minnesota, John & Catherine Primus sold the farm in Meire Grove to their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth & Christoph Welle, and they retired and moved to town. Elizabeth and Christopher rented out their Spring Hill farm and in 1897 they sold the Spring Hill farm to their son, Hubert Welle.

Many of John and Catherine Primus' children settled on farms very near the original Primus farm in Section 16 & 17 of Grove Township:

-Elizabeth & Christoph Welle -bought the Primus farm
-Anna & Herman Imdieke -NW in Section 7 & 8 (Imdieke Brickyard)
-Mary & George Leukam -SW in Section 21
-John Primus Jr -N in Section 9
-Pauline & Henry Schneider -SW in Section 16

Catherine & Alex Marthaler farmed near West Union, Minn. Anton J Primus moved out west to the state of Washington. (visit Anton J. Primus record for infomration about being joined in Washington by his niece and two nephews.)

Century Farms
Today most of these farms started by the Primus, Imdieke, Leukam and Schneiders family members continue to be owned and operated by one of their decendants. Since they have been in one family for more than 100 years, they are registered Century Farms in Minnesota.

Death & Burial
Catherine (Nathe) Primus died on August 14, 1901 in Melrose, Minn. She is buried in Section B, Row 5, Plot 6 of St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose, Minn (formerly St. Boniface Cemetery).

Four years later, on June 29, 1905, John J. Primus died and would be buried next to his wife.
