John J Primus
1824 - 1905

John J. Primus was born on June 10, 1824 in Arnsberg, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany to Elizabeth & John Primus Sr.

John J. Primus married Catherine Nathe, the daughter of Wilhelm and Anna Margaretha (Besting) Nathe, on February 25, 1851 in Germany.

The family of John J. & Catherine (Nathe) Primus immigrated to America and first settled near Milwaukee, Wisc. The family members that made the nine week journey were John & Catherine and their two daughters; Elizabeth & Anna; the parents of John J Primus; John Sr & Elizabeth Primus, and three of their sons - Casper Primus, Joseph Primus and Anton Primus.

While living in Wisconsin, John J & Catherine Primus had 3 more children: Joseph (1857), Mary Anna (1860) and John Primus Jr. (1862).

Moving to Minnesota
In 1862 the family moved to a 160 acre farm 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile east of Meire Grove in Sections 16 & 17 of Grove Township in Stearns County, Minnesota. An additional 80 acres was just north of the homestead, in Section 8 of Grove Township.

A log cabin was erected to house the family. The cabin was a primitive affair with dirt floors and no windows and only the kitchen stove for light and heat. They had an ox team for farming, but they had no suitable winter shelter for them. Often on winter nights, the oxen and the members of the family slept in a row on the hard floor, with nothing in the way of a bed but some coarse grass cut from the river bottom.

During the first winter the family had absolutely nothing in the way of purchased provisions except 100 pounds of flour. Their principal fare was deer and rabbit meat cooked in various fashions. There were no vegetables and even potatos being unknown during the whole winter.

The last three children were born on the farm near Meire Grove, Grove Township, Stearns County, Minn: Catherine (1864), Anton (1866) and Pauline (1869).

Family Farms

John & Catherine sold their farm to their daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth & Christoph Welle. The Welle's rented out their Spring Hill farm and moved to the Meire Grove farm with thier youngest children.

The next generation to own and operate the Meire Grove farm would be the fourth son of Elizabeth and Chrisoph Welle, Joseph J. Welle and his wife Anna Welle.

Six of John and Catherine Primus' children married and settled on farms nearby the original Primus farm in Section 16 & 17 of Grove Township:

-Elizabeth & Chrisoph Welle -bought Primus homestead farm

Century Farms
Today most of these farms started by the Primus, Imdieke, Leukam and Schneiders family members continue to be owned and operated by one of their decendants. Since they have been in one family for more than 100 years, they are registered Century Farms in Minnesota.

John J Primus died on June 29, 1905, four years after his wife passed away. They are buried in Row 5 of Section B (Plot 7 & 8) of St. Mary's Cemetery in Melrose, Minn. (formerly St. Boniface Cemetery).
