(Born Steinfeld, Germany, Sept. 8, 1831 - Died Nov. 3, 1914).
Farmer.
Coming to the United States with his family in 1846, Bockenstedt was unable to speak English, but learned to make wooden shoes. He followed the trade for three years in addition to helping his father on their farm near New Vienna. Saving his money, he was able to purchase 120 acres of land at $1.25 per acre. Always generous, he helped financially in the construction of at least four churches and schools in Dyersville and Luxemburg.
