In the 1950 federal census Donnie is listed as a farm hand living with his widowed mother in unincorporated Bondville, Scott Township, Champaign County about six miles west of Champaign, Illinois along with his sister Mary, age 16, and his brother Charles, age 12. The preparation date for that page of the census was May 12; Donnie died of polio less than four months later.
In 2018 a nephew of Donnie's (who would have been age 10 in 1950) recalled that he had been told that Donnie attended the Illinois State Fair in Springfield and contracted polio there.
(In 1950 the State Fair was held from August 11-20; headliners included WLS Barn Dance Show with Rex Allen and Homer & Jethro; Bob Hope also appeared.)
