She attended three different one-room country schools and graduated from eighth grade in Pellsville, a town just west of Rankin. Both Pellsville and Rankin are in Butler Township in the northwest corner of Vermilion County but the small community of Pellsville has since disappeared.
Maxine attended high school in Rankin and graduated with the Class of 1942. On Sept 18, 1943, she married Ralph J. Newman; they had 12 children and were married more than 62 years.
