TUCSON, Ariz. — Helen
Louise Ray Mechler of Tucson,
formerly of Grove City,
passed away at 11:25 a.m. Friday,
April 3, 2009, in Tucson
Medical Center after a long
health decline. She was 83.
A daughter of Charles
George Ray and Bertha Irene Nelson
Ray, Mrs. Mechler was born July 15,
1925, in Grove City. She was a
graduate of Grove City
High School and earned a bachelor
of arts degree in English from
Grove City College. Helen taught
at the former Plain Grove High
School for a short time and, for
several years, worked at Intermediate
Unit IV, Grove City. She was a member
of East Main Presbyterian Church in
Grove City. Helen and Gene Harrold
Mechler were united in marriage
Nov. 24, 1946, and spent their years
together in Grove City. Gene, an
electrician and postal worker, passed
away Nov. 8, 1978. She also married
William I. Phillips IV, a Washington
electronics business owner, in 1997,
for a short time. "Mother was a
dedicated wife and mother who had no
mean bone in her body." Surviving are:
two sons, Gary E. Mechler, Ph.D., and
his wife Elizabeth "Libby" Howell,
Tucson; and Douglas R. Mechler,
Decatur, Ala.; a grandson, Gene Collin
Mechler, Tucson; three granddaughters,
Heather Susanne Mechler, Tuscaloosa, Ala.;
Amanda Kathrine Mechler, Decatur; and
Paetia Howell Mechler, Tucson; and a
sister, Donna Marie Ray Robson,
West Newton, Pa. She was preceded in
death by her parents.
