Obituary Register of Deeds Gove, KS

Ethel Marie, daughter of Anna C. (North) an Andrew M. Johnson, was born Nov. 4, 1895 in Plainville, Kansas. She died Sunday afternoon, May 23, 1982 in the Gove County Hospital, Quinter at the age of 86 years, 6 months and 19 days. She was the oldest of 3 children which include a brother, Carl Andrew, and niece, Eva Irene Wilson, who was taken into the home in infancy.

The family moved to Republic and Natoma where her father owned a General Merchandise store. In 1908 they moved to Grainfield for one year while building their farm home 3 miles northwest of Gove. She received her primary and secondary education in the schools of Natoma, Grainfield and Gove. She attended Normal School in Hays for 3 terms and then taught 3 years, 2 of which were in the Gove Grade School system. She returned to Fort Hays State Teachers College and received a Life Cerificate in 1919, after which she taught 3 more years.

On June 1, 1920 she was united in marriage to Clifford James Bland in her parents home. Until his death in 1945, they lived in or near Gvoe except for a short time, early in their marriage, when they lived on a farm northwest of Oakley. Into this home circle five children were born; Clifford, Kenneth, Marie, Elinor and Wayne. Don a foster son, was welcomed in the family fellowship as a youth.

Ethel was a member of the Gove United Methodist Chrch, Order of the Eastern Star, Gray Ladies of the Quinter Rest Home, Gove Utopian Federated Club and Gove County Historical Society. She held charter memberships in the American Legion Auxiliary Post 301, Fort Hays Half Century Club, Gove United Methodist Women and was a past member of the Gove Rebekah Lodge. She gave many years service in each organization and also served 6 years as Director of the Gove Grade School Board. She loved the farm and remained active in the cattle program with her son, Kenneth, even after moving into Gove in 1966. Her beautiful flower garden was a testimony of her love for God's good earth. The last years of her busy life were devoted to locating and marking unmarked graves in the Gove Cemetery for the Historical Society and involvement in the local nutrition program for Senior Citizens.

Preceeding her in death were her parents, brother, husband and son, Clifford. She leaves to mourn her passing her sister Eva Mrazek of Golden, Colorado; sons Wayne of Boston, Mass.; Don and wife Berniece, Lakewood, Colo.; Kenneth and wife Mae; and daughters, Marie and husband Gail Beesley; Elinor and husband Lawrence Wilson and a daughter-in-law, Dora Bland, all of Gove. Also mourning their loss are 15 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends.

She knew the Lord as her Savior and as a guiding force in her life and it can truthfully be said, "The world is a better place because she lived."

Casket bearers were, Robbie Bland, Donnie Bland, Cliff Wilson, Bruce Wilson, Marvin Beesley, Boyd Bland, Ray Bland and Robert Bland, grandsons.

Music was by Mrs. Wayne Packard, Mrs. Henry Doxon, Mrs. Jon Tuttle and Mrs. J.L. Mendenhall with Mrs. Nelda Beesley as organist. Songs were "No Night There" and "In The Garden" Jody Bland sang a solo, "Welcome Home My Children".
