Calvin L Moritz, 73 year old farmer, who lived with his wife, Nannie, aged 70, along the Knoxlyn Rd., had been reported missing early in the evening. By 10:00 neighbors found his body in a nearby corn patch with a hoe by his side.
Dr. C. G. Crist, Adams County coroner, was called and blamed a coronary occlusion for the death. Then he went to the Moritz home to speak with the widow who had been joined by neighbors.
A few minutes after receiving the word of her husband's death, Mrs. Moritz became ill and her physician, Dr. David Stoner, was summoned. By 11:00 she had died. A heart attack induced by shock was blamed. She had suffered from a heart condition for some time.
The time of Mr. Moritz's death was placed at 7:00. Neighbors had noticed him in the corn field at about that time. It was the last time he was seen alive.
Before her death, Mrs. Moritz had directed that the Bender Funeral Home be called to make arrangements for her husband's
burial. Before the funeral director arrived, Mrs. Moritz had passed away.
Now a joint funeral service has been planned for Saturday afternoon at 2:00 at the Bender Funeral Home here.
The time of her death was placed at about 11:00.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Moritz had been married before. Their wedding took place in 1948.
Mr. Moritz was a native of the county and a son of the late Peter and Martha Leady Moritz. He was a farmer for most of his life but for 30 years had worked for the state Highway Department, retiring several years ago.
He was a member of the Mt. Carmel EUB Church.
His first wife was Virgie May Stultz, who died in 1943. Surviving from their marriage are two daughters, Mrs. Glenn Whisler, Gettysburg R5, and Mrs. Merle Stultz, Gettysburg. There are four grandchildren and a great grandchild. There is also a brother surviving, Jacob Moritz, Orrtanna.
Interment will be made in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Mrs. Moritz was born near Berkeley Springs, W. Va. and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Ida R Messinger Newell. She attended Berkeley Springs High School and was a member of the Presbyterian Church at Hunterstown.
Her first husband, Frank A Newell, died in 1946.
Nine children survive from that marriage. They are Mrs. Mildred Orner, Biglerville; John H Newell, Biglerville R2; Mrs. Emmert Longanecker, Biglerville; Franklin Newell, Orrtanna; Mrs. Bernard Plank, Aspers; Mrs. Robert Lentz, Orrtanna R1; William Newell, York Springs; Mrs. Wallace Little, Newton, N.J., and Mrs. Verna Smith, York. There is also a brother, Charles, Seven Stars. There are 18 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
