Oldest son of Charles Warren Lentz and Minnie Mae Riegle Lentz. He married Margaret Janie Rebecka Linn on 1 July 1940. They had one surviving daughter, Ellen. Their daughter Janie Riegle Lentz died as an infant.

Clair was one of 5 sons to serve in the military during World War II. His brother Eugene was killed in the Philippines. Another brother, Richard served during the Korean War and was killed in Japan. The youngest brother, Carl, also served in the military but was not involved in any conflicts.

From a newspaper clipping about 5 Lentz brothers serving during WWII: Lt. Clair Lentz, 34, a bombardier instructor in the Army Air Forces is stationed at Gardner Field, Calif. He entered the service in August, 1942, and trained at Atlantic City and Miami Beach. He was employed by the American Tobacco Company in North Carolina before entering the service.

At the time of his death, Clair was President C. R. Lentz, Wholesale.
