Frank Kosak was born in Soldau Prussia, which is now a part of Poland. He came from a poor family and was apprenticed out to a tailor to learn the tailoring trade.

He met and married Sophie Braunschweig and they eloped, as her parents were against the marriage.

They departed to America and settled in Brooklyn NY, where Frank worked as a tailor. Their first four children were born there.

Frank moved his family to East Saginaw MI, where they lived for about five more years. Their last four children were born in Saginaw. One son, John, died in infancy.

About 1884, he moved their family to Sioux City IA. Two years later, Frank contracted typhoid fever and died at the age of 36. He left a wife and seven children.
