Bertha Kosak was the child of immigrants, Frank and Sophie Braunschweig Kosak. Her family moved to MI about 1880, and then to Sioux City IA.

Her father died when she was 10 and being the oldest girl, she went to work early in life.

She was married briefly to William Knight, then divorced. She worked in a laundry for several years before moving to Chicago to care for her motherless nephew.

Bertha lived to be about 75.
