Ursula was born in the village of Scleitheim, in the Canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland on December 26, 1839, one of 10 known children of Heinrich Maeder and wife Anna Russenberger. While most of the family came to the US in 1867, she obviously came earlier, perhaps with her brother Alexander, who arrived in 1864. She married Christian Wanner, also from Schleitheim, at the Etna Congregational Church of September 20, 1865. She gave birth to 6 children, all who lived long enough to become married. While Christian and Ursula started married life in Etna, they soon moved to Sharpsburg. Ursula actually owned more than one house there and probably supported herself after Christian's death with her renter's money. She had a small tiff with her oldest daughter Anna Margaret, after the girl married William Wikert. In her will she left a substantial amount of cash to her other children, but left only $5 to Anna. She died on August 19, 1901 at an Eastern Avenue address in Aspinwall, probably at the home of her daughter Emma Prager.
