Obituary - 25 July 2010 - The Gazette
Leona (Heiman) Pounds-Haggstrom, 98, departed this life July 20, 2010. She was born in Beloit, Kansas on April 11, 1912, the day before the Titanic went down. Leona was a resident of Colorado Springs since 1939 and was the oldest girl of 11 children born to Anthony and Catherine (Salley) Heiman, immigrant pioneers to the West. Her childhood days were spent on the family farm on the high plains near Beloit, Kansas. Before and after school she and her siblings would weed sunflowers, feed chickens, milk cows, and let the sheep out to pasture. Once her chores were completed it was off to ride the horses and enjoy a dip in the swimming hole. Leona was a graduate of the Flowers College of Cosmetology and was a licensed beautician for 30 years. She was an accomplished baker and enjoyed cooking, reading, and visiting with friends. In retirement she enjoyed dancing. The Two Step and Viennese Waltzes were her favorites. She was a dedicated volunteer at the Goodwill Store and a member of the Colorado Springs Senior Center. Leona was preceded in death by her husbands, Milford 0. Pounds and Virgil Haggstrom; eleven great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Her family and friends will long remember her beautiful twinkling blue eyes and her statuesque blond beauty. God rest her Soul and celebrate her return to those she loves on the other side. She has loosened the ties that bound her. Hallelujah.
