Luray Woman Seriously Injured - Edith Zweifel, 70, Luray, is in the intensive care unit at Hadley Regional Medical Center, Hays after being injured in a one-car crash north of Russell Tuesday afternoon,(28 Dec. 1976). Her condition is reported as serious but stable. She received a broken leg, severe lacerations and other injuries.

The fact the woman is alive is credited to motorist Phil Jones, Hays, who spotted her overturned car in a ravine near US281Highway, 14 miles north of Russell. The woman was pinned in the overturned car at the bottom of a 27 ft. ravine, about 67 feet west of the highway. State Trooper Art Gumpenberger, Undersheriff Larry Batt, and Greg Scott spent over 30 minutes trying to free the woman from the car. Her leg was pinned between the steering wheel and the roof of the overturned auto. Officers were able to break out windows, force a door open, and remove her through the back seat of the sedan. The top was smashed to within inches of the dash and seats.

Jones told officers that he was driving past the site when he saw the car in the ravine. When he stopped to investigate, he discovered the woman still in the car. The discovery was made at 5:30pm. It is not known today how long the woman was pinned in the wreck. Batt said the exhaust pipe and engine of the car were cool to his touch when he arrived, indicating she had been there an hour or more. Tracks indicate the car went off the east shoulder of the road, skidded about 150 feet before going back on the slab and into the west ditch. The vehicle went over the ravine bank, 67 feet west of the highway edge, snapped off a tree, and landed upside-down in the bottom of the dry waterway.
