NEW GLARUS – Oswald Schmid, 88, died last night at 11 in his home. He had been in poor health for some time and was suffering from an arthritic condition.

Mr. Schmid, son of Thomas and Anna Hauser Schmid, was born on January 15, 1872 in New Glarus. On March 31, 1898, in Monroe he was married to the former Sylvia Zimmerman. They had always lived in the New Glarus area and in 1943 they sold their farm and retired to the village.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia Stuessy, New Glarus, and Mrs. James Harkins, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He is the last of his family and was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Mrs. John Disch, Ms. San Schneider and Mrs. Fred Wurgler, and three brothers, Matt, Thomas and Casper.

Mr. Schmid was a lifelong member of the Swiss United Church of Christ Church having been baptized and confirmed there.

Services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. in the Swiss United Church of Christ Church with Reverend Lynn F.B. Tschudy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the Zentner Funeral Home in New Glarus.
