Alvin attended grade schools in Geneva and District 7 west of Geneva. He graduated from high school in Geneva n 1934. After graduation, Alvin worked at Lauber Farms and picked potatoes in the western part of Nebraska. He married Ciara Jansen of Exeter on Sept. 18, 1936, and to them 5 children were born. They lived with his parents for a year and with Uncle Ernest and Aunt Lizzie Gerken for a short time while he worked for Lauber's at York.

They rented farm ground near Clay Center and lived there for nearly a year. Next they rented ground three miles west and 1 ½ miles north of Geneva. They farmed land in South Dakota for three years in the late 1940’s.

He was always progressive and kept up with the latest farming techniques. He loved farming. They built a house in Geneva and retired from farming in the 1980’s. In later years you always saw Alvin driving his pickup around looking at the crops and watching anything being built.

He was baptized and confirmed at the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod. He joined Grace Lutheran Church in Geneva.
