Philomena Schwarz, 95, of Marcus and formerly of Le Mars, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Philomena was born Aug. 13, 1908, at rural Le Mars, the daughter of Frank and Bernadine (Deters) Harpenau. She grew up in the Le Mars area and attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Le Mars. On Dec. 30, 1930, she married Joseph Schwarz at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars.
Following their marriage, the couple farmed near Remsen for two years, then south of Le Mars for 20 years until they purchased their own farm west of Neptune. They lived there until retiring and moving into Le Mars. Joseph Schwarz died
in 1965.
Philomena was a resident at Heartland Care Center in Marcus since 1998.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars until moving to Marcus where she was a member of Holy Name
Catholic Church and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Survivors include six daughters, Eleanor Dreckman of Marcus, Norma McCann and her husband, Patrick, of Ankeny, Anita Towns and her husband, Keith, of Hinton, Bernice
Beaulieu and her husband, James, of Hinton, Darlene Lipert and her husband, Harry, of Lincoln, Neb., Lois Kingsbury and her husband, James, of Conway, Ark.; one daughter-in-law, Alviria Schwarz of Marcus; 42 grandchildren; 74 great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-granddaughter; one brother, Isadore Harpenau of Remsen; one sister, Rita Kolbeck and her husband, Marvin, of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Loretta
Harpenau and Shirley Harpenau of Remsen; and one brother-in-law and his wife, Charles and Paula Schwarz of Belgrade, Minn.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph; two sons, Roger in1968 and Marvin in 1997; a daughter, Donita, who died in infancy; a son-in-law, Jim Dreckman; two sisters, Mary Kolbeck and Evelyn Miller; six brothers, John, Henry, Joseph, Athony, Father Leo and Al; two great-grandsons, Keith Schwarz and Keith Towns and one great-greatgrandson, Trevor Boldra.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus with the Rev. Eugene Murray officiating. Graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church Cemetery, Neptune, rural Hinton.
Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Earnest-
Rhode Funeral Home in Marcus with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
