Henry C. Gross was born in Pea Ridge township, Brown County on May 9, 1883, a son of Phillip and Mary Johanna Gross. He was baptized when young in St. Johns Lutheran Church in Quincy.

He married Sarah Ann Williamson in Clayton on December 24, 1904.

Mr. Gross was engaged in the coal and feed business for more than 30 years. In 1930 he and his son-in-law, Herman Holkamp Jr., established the Gross-Hokamp Coal and Oil company of Quincy. Mr. Gross sold his interest to Mr. Hokamp in 1939. During the nine years he was active in the business the Gross home was in Quincy.

Henry C. Gross, 71, of Clayton, died July 14, 1954 in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.

At the time of his death he was survived by his widow Sarah, two daughters, Mrs. Esther Hokamp of Quincy and Mrs. Greta May Springett of La Grange, Mo.; three brothers John G. and Ed P. Gross of Clayton and Julias D. gross of Pea Ridge township; a sister Mrs. Mary Amelia Dennis of Augusta; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.
