Philip Heinrich Gross was born May 13, 1845 in Miehlen, Nassau, Germany, son of Johann Peter Gross and Anna Maria Aulmann Gross.

On July 28, 1852, Philip Heinrich, age 6, with his five siblings and parents set sail to American on the ship Caroline and Mary Clark. The ship docked in New Orleans on Sept. 21, 1852. In 1860 the family settled in Marion County, Mo. and by 1870 the family was living in Quincy, Adams County, Illinois.

Philip Heinrich married Mary Johanna Rinneberg on June 25, 1868 in Adams County in the St.John's church in Quincy. To this union were born 9 children, John G., Minnie, Julius David, Amelia M., Matilda, Charles, Henry G., Elizabeth A.,and Edward P.

Around 1883 Philip and Mary settled on a farm in Pea Ridge Township in Brown County. Mr. Gross erected a wind mill which pumped water, run a shredder, feed grinder and turned the lathe for furniture making. This wind mill also pumped water to buildings where milk was kept. They sold butter in Clayton and after he started farming he put out all kind of fruit trees, berries, and rows of grapes, so they had plenty for family use and to sell. He also had a Cane Mill.

Around 1894 Philip and his wife sold the farm to their son-in-law and daughter, Henry and Matilda Hapke. They moved to Clayton, Il.

Philip H. died on December 13, 1919 and at the time of his death he was survived by John G., Julius D., Mary Amelia, Charles William, Henry Christon, and Edward Philip. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary,daughters Elizabeth, Anna Matilda,and a daughter Minnie who died in infancy.
