Mary Johanna Rinneberg was born June 22, 1848 in Adams County Illinois.

She married Philip Heinrich Gross on June 25, 1868 in Adams County (Quincy, Il) at St. John's church. To this union was born nine children John Godfrey, Minnie Anna, Julius David, Mary Amelia, Anna Matilda, Charles William, Henry Christon, Eikiline Elizabeth, and Philip Edward.

Philip H. and Mary settled on a farm in Pea Ridge township where they raised their family. Life flourished on their farm and in addition to farming they sold butter, berries and fruit to their customers in Clayton. They also had a Cane mill where they made sorghum molasses.

Around 1894 Philip and Mary sold the farm and the family moved to Clayton.

Mary Johanna Gross died December 29, 1911 in Clayton, Adams County Illinois.

At the time of her death she was survived by her husband Philip; 5 sons, John G., Julius D., Charles William, Henry C., and Philip Edward; one daughter Mary Amelia. She was preceded in death by her parents; three daughters, Anna Matilda, E. Elizabeth and Minnie in infancy.
