The daughter of Frederick and Diana Ketzler, Henrietta Ellis (Ketzler) Gross was born in Quincy, Illinois, on September 21, 1838. On April 8, 1857 she married John David Gross in Adams County, Illinois. To them, nine children were born; two of whom died in infancy, while a son, George W. Gross, was killed in a tragic accident in 1900 while working in St. Louis.

As part of a musically talented family, Mrs. Gross was a long-time piano teacher in Clayton, Illinois. Her eldest son, Frederick D. Gross, was the bandmaster of the 5th Cavalry and 10th Infantry Regiment bands. Her youngest son, George W. Gross, was only the third bandmaster of the Texas A & M "Fightin' Texas Aggie Band." Her husband, "Professor" John David Gross, conducted the Mt. Sterling "Silver Cornet Band" as well as "Professor Gross' Full Orchestra" that played for the earliest commencement exercises at Mt. Sterling High School as well as many prominent social events in Mt. Sterling and Versailles, Illinois

Mrs. Gross died on Wednesday, December 2, 1903, in Mt. Sterling, Illinois, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Albertha Meyer. On Friday, December 4, 1903, Rev. Huffner of the Presbyterian Church conducted her funeral service at the family home in Clayton.

She was survived by her husband, son Frederick David Gross, and daughters Julia A (Gross) Little, Henrietta E. (Gross) Wilson, Amelia Catherine (Gross) Boehm, Albertha (Gross) Meyer, and Lula Eugene (Gross) Dempster.
