The daughter of John D. Gross and Henrietta E. (Ketzler) Gross, Lula Eugene (Gross) Haselwood was born on February 16, 1879 in Clayton, Adams County, Illinois. On October 31, 1900, she married Robert Dempster at the Clayton Presbyterian Church. Dempster, a native New Yorker, was a prominent trotting horse trainer in Clayton working for the stables of James Hazlett. Not only did he train horses, he also was an expert harness driver who won many races in the greater Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Kentucky areas. They had two children, John Willard Dempster and Albertha (Dempster) Pomeroy.

Sometime between 1916 and 1918, Lula Eugene (Gross) Dempster married Hugh Walter Haselwood, also a native of Adams County who was working as a prison guard in LaPorte County, Indiana. Haselwood brought four sons by his first wife (this was his third marriage) to the marriage, Kent W., John B., Marion K., and Elmo V. Haselwood.

Retiring from his last job as a prison superintendent in Jackson, Michigan, the Haselwoods moved to Pinellas County, Florida. He died on March 2, 1958. While he is buried in Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park in Pinellas County, Florida, his name is on a headstone in New Payson Cemetery in Adams County, Illinois, together with his first wife, Nettie Wheelock. Lula Eugene (Gross) Haselwood died on November 21, 1967.
