OWENSBORO MESSENGER INQUIRER OBITUARY – 11/13/2010
Mary Louella Knott Farmer, 92, formerly of Petit, died peacefully September 11, 2010, at her home in Oakland, CA, following a brief struggle with esophageal cancer. Louella was born in Owensboro to Henry & Alma Knott on November 17, 1917. Her husband, Moses Farmer; a twin sister, Mary Jennie Knott Hines; sisters, Margaret Marie Knott Roberts and Della May Knott Kerrick; brothers, Charles Louis Knott, James Aloysius Knott, Martin Raphael Knott and William Aubrey Knott preceded her in death. Louella retired from Central Bank & Trust as head auditor. During her lengthy banking career, she made many friends that she kept until her death. She loved to travel and had traveled often with Elderhostel and Friendship Force to much of Europe, Central and South America, as well as Japan. Social justice issues were important to Louella, and while living in Owensboro, she participated in the Forty Day Peace Committee during the Vietnam War and did jail ministry in the county jail. After moving to Oakland, she did respite care for AIDS patients and became involved with A Friendly Place, which provides services for homeless women. A daughter, Frances Catherine Farmer of Oakland, and a son, James Colby Farmer & his wife, Elise, of Philpot, survive her. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. November 21 at Faith Lutheran Church, 2830 Frederica St., Owensboro. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy can be sent to A Friendly Place, 2298 San Pablo Ave., Oakland, CA 94612.
