George Yost, Resident Here 52 Years, Dead
Succumbs at Hospital in McCook Three Days After Operation; Was Past 80
The death of George Yost, a resident of Culbertson and vicinity for 52 years, occurred last Saturday at St. Catherine's hospital in McCook. Mr. Yost had been ill for a long time. On Tuesday of last week he was taken from his home here to the hospital, where he underwent an operation the following morning.
George Yost, son of Henry and Elizabeth Yost, was born at Norka, Russia, on September 17, 1863. He passed away on July 15, 1944, at the age of 80 years, nine months and 28 days.
He was united in marriage with A. Marie Schleining in Russia on January 24, 1890. They were the parents of seven children, two of whom, Dave and George, preceded their father in death.
In 1892, Mr. Yost and his bride of two years emigrated to America and located in Culbertson, where Mr. Yost took employment with the Burlington railroad. A few years later, the family moved to a farm about four miles west of Culbertson. Since retiring from the farm several years ago, Mr. Yost had lived in the village of Culbertson.
When a child, George Yost was baptized in the Reformed Lutheran church in Norka, Russia, and was later confirmed in that faith. After coming to America, he was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church.
Mr. Yost's wife died here in November 27, 1938. He is survived by four sons, Henry and Joe of Culbertson, Dan of Los Angeles, Calif., and Jake; one daughter, Mrs. Lydia Western of San Francisco, Calif.; two brothers, Peter and Mike Yost, of Culbertson, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Burkett of Culbertson and Mrs. Lena Dodd of Ananita, Colo.
Funeral services conducted Tuesday afternoon in Zion Evangelical church were in charge of the pastor, Rev. F.E. Schroeder. H.D. Jeffries, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church at Hastings, Neb., delivered the funeral sermon and R.R. Osborne, assistant pastor of that church, also assisted. Humns were sung as a duet by Mrs. A.M. Smithe and Mrs. Geo. Hein, with Mrs. Geo. Gerlach as accompanist. Burial was in the Culbertson cemetery.
