Death Comes Suddenly to "Mike" Yost
Martin (Mike) Yost, a well known resident of the Culbertson community for more than half a century, died suddenly at his home in this village at about 2:00 a.m. on Monday, April 1.
Mr. Yost had been ailing for some time, but was up and around town as usual Sunday afternoon. He woke his wife up shortly after midnight and complained about being unable to sleep and a little later on Mrs. Yost noticed that he was gasping for breath. He passed away before medical aid could be summoned.
Coming to America in 1890 from Norka, Russia, where he was born on October 3, 1870, Mr. Yost located in Culbertson and was engaged in railroad work for five or six years. While temporarily a resident of Benkelman, he was united in marriage with Miss Elizabeth Sauer of Culbertson on October 12, 1894. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary here on that date in 1944.
In 1896, Mr. and Mrs. Yost moved onto a farm two and one-half miles west of Culbertson, which remained their home for more than 40 years. They have resided in Culbertson for about seven years. They were the parents of six children. Two sons preceeded their father in death. Mr. Yost attained the age of 75 years, 5 months and 29 days.
Funeral services held here Wednesday afternoon in the Seventh Day Adventist church were conducted by Rev. R.R. Henneberg. Interment was in the Culbertson cemetery. The pallbearers were Lewis Hidy, Roy Waterman, Wm. George, H.H. Yost, Wm. Glantz and Wesley Ehlers.
Besides his wife, Mr. Yost is survived by two sons, Dan Yost of Alliance, Neb., and Ed Yost of Haigler, Neb.; two daughters, Mrs. George Clark of Galveston, Texas, and Mrs. Emil Wyzourek of Ardmore, S.D.; one brother, Peter Yost, of Culbertson; two sisters, Mrs. Geo. Dodd of Alamoosa, Iowa, and Mrs. Wm. Burkett of Culbertson; two grandsons and one granddaughter.
