Martin Latka was born on the 17 of October, 1857 in Galicia, Poland. In the early 1880's he married Antonia Skitsko and was blessed with 9 children: Nellie, Victoria, John, Carol, Andrew, Frank, Mary, Cathrena, and Joseph. On May 15, 1905 the whole family got aboard the "Lake Michigan" ship in Antwerp, Belgium and sailed for Montreal, Canada. They arrived on Canadian soil on May 28, 1905. The family quickly got settled into an area near Smoky Lake, Alberta and started their homesteads here.
